Work with children and teens, ages 6 – 17 years, at this one weekend bereavement camp designed for children who are grieving the loss of someone close to them. It’s a weekend long experience filled with traditional, fun, camp activities combined with grief education and emotional support. There are many areas for you to volunteer; be a “Cabin Big Buddy”, do arts and crafts, cook/meal preparation, recreation, set-up or help clean-up the camp!
The average time commitment is 20 hours between March and July, divided among meetings, required training and committee work, plus participating in camp from Friday morning through mid-day on Sunday and a post-camp reunion event scheduled in July. With limited exceptions, volunteers are required to spend the entire weekend with us at camp. Training is mandatory and will be provided to all volunteers. Topics will include: expressions of childhood grief, communicating effectively with children, providing active listening and support, and bereavement education. We will incorporate part of the camp planning process into our training. Training will take place on this spring. Volunteers serving as Cabin Big Buddies must attend an additional 2-hour training and help put on a Pizza Party event with the children and their parents/guardians prior to camp. We know that you will be rewarded in many ways for spending the weekend with children who are trying to make sense of their experience and need some reassurance (and tools) to help them get through some difficult times.
